Wine and wet weather fail to dampen lively Gugs festival

2013-06-02 14:00

Fun and fabulous. That was the verdict from the more than 4 500 people who attended last weekend’s Tops at Spar Gugulethu Wine Festival. The two-day event wasn’t dampened by the weekend’s wet weather, and neither were people’s moods.

Unathi Msengana, the ambassador for the City of Cape Town, was gracious as the VIP-room host, while the Marimba Vibration band kept the guests bobbing their heads and wiggling their hips. But the VIP section was not the only place to have fun.

The main marquee was dotted with luxury lounges, including the JC Le Roux spot. They have a fantastic new sparkling wine that had me going back repeatedly. Pongrácz had burly bouncers on hand, and the Two Ocean’s beauty and pamper station was a hit.

As is tradition, the Nederburg Wine and Food Taste theatre was in huge demand, with patrons who wanted to meet Pete Goffe-Wood, the MasterChef SA judge, and Nederburg wine maker Wilhelm Pienaar, who were giving their views on wine and food pairings.

Thank goodness for the food station, where Mzoli’s meat and Frank’s pizza were supplied by the plate load. Next time, we hope Mzoli will bring more meat and take down the ridiculously high prices.

Despite the taste glasses that kept slipping from people’s hands by closing time on Saturday, this was most definitely the best fun with wine in Cape Town!
