Winnie highway probe continues

2011-01-28 10:29

Gauteng police are still investigating the circumstances of a highway confrontation involving Winnie Madikizela-Mandela’s driver and two police officials.

“No one has been suspended. We are still investigating,” spokesperson Colonel Neville Malila said.

Officers Jannie Odendaal and Abel Twala were transferred from their own stations on the East Rand and Soweto following the incident.

Madikizela-Mandela was being driven along the M1 north in Johannesburg on December 20 when the vehicle was stopped by the officers, reportedly because it was being driven recklessly and at high speed.

The situation then apparently escalated into a confrontation between the driver, Jacob Monare, and the officers.

Offensive language was reportedly used when Madikizela-Mandela was addressed.

She has said through her office that she was only a passenger in the vehicle and had tried to calm the situation.

The original information police sent to the National Prosecuting Authority for a decision on whether to go ahead with a complaint of intimidation and pointing a firearm against the policemen, was sent back to the police with a request for further information.
