Art, furniture and a silver tea set belonging to ANC struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela will go under the hammer next week to repay a debt.

She defaulted on a R20 000 payment of accommodation fees to Abbotts College for her great niece Nobantu Vutela, according to court documents reported on by national daily, the Sowetan, today.

The Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court made a judgment against her on May 6, 2011.

The newspaper reported that Alan Levy Attorneys had issued a notice of a sale in execution at her home in Maseli Street, Orlando West, Soweto, next Tuesday, at which only cash would be accepted.

Items up for auction included 50 paintings, a round table and four chairs, one round table with 10 chairs, a 24-piece silver tea set, books and sculptures, the Sowetan reported.

Sowetan reported that Madikizela-Mandela signed an agreement on January 11 2008, pledging to pay R40 000 in accommodation fees for Vutela. The outstanding amount of R20 000 included interest and legal fees.
