Wits University vice-chancellor Adam Habib has apologised to the victims of sexual harassment at the university, and those who became victims of racial discrimination in the university’s 91-year history.

The university recently fired two academics after they were found guilty of sexually harassing students, and initiated a university-wide investigation into the scourge of sexual harassment.

“… Today, without any reservation or qualification, I want to apologise as (Wits’) new vice-chancellor to all those we have done wrong by, and to pledge that we collectively will work towards a safe, student-centred, nonracial, culturally plural and sensitive, cosmopolitan academic environment,” he said.

Speaking at the occasion of his formal installation as Wits’ vice-chancellor and principal at its main campus in Braamfontein today, Habib said that while Wits’ student population was the most diverse in the country, its academic racial diversity “leaves much to be desired”.

He said the institution will retain its “cosmopolitan character”, despite its commitment to diversity.
