Wits, Polokwane City in share of the points

2013-10-23 22:02

A superb display from Polokwane City goalkeeper Modiri Marumo allowed his soccer side to hold on for 0-0 draw with Wits in their Premiership clash at Wits Stadium in Johannesburg.

Marumo made a host of saves to deny the hosts, who enjoyed more attempts on goal.

The draw is Polokwane's first of the season, having lost five of their seven league encounters so far.

The Clever Boys were quick off the mark and went close early on as Sibusiso Vilakazi's delivery found Robin Ngalande in the area.

Ngalande rose above the Polokwane defence and headed goalwards, but was denied by the crossbar.

Wits kept up the pressure as further chances fell to Benjani Mwaruwari, Onismor Bhasera and Vilakazi. City struggled to keep up with the pace.

Siphesihle Nzimande replied for the visitors with a shot in the 10th minute, but Wits' goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs made a comfortable stop to keep the scores level.

Nzimande's effort sparked City into life and Galabgwe Moyana challenged Josephs with a fierce attempt shortly after, but the former Bafana Bafana shot-stopper was equal to the task and parried away out of danger.

Vilakazi proved to be a handful in the City half as he went close three times in quick succession, with Nzimande and Bhongolwethu Jayiya providing their striker with a number of dangerous deliveries.

Despite a host of chances for both teams in the opening half, neither could take the ascendancy and headed into the interval on level terms.

Ryan Chapman, who replaced Mwaruwari in the first half, tested Marumo from range, but he showed safe hands to deny the substitute the opener.

Vilakazi found Marumo difficult to pass, as the City number one thwarted the striker once again after the hour mark.

Marumo looked unbeatable as Kwanda Mngonyama was next to have his effort stopped by the determined goalkeeper, after a powerful header forced a fingertip save.

Asive Langwe tried his luck five minutes from time, but his cracking effort was again deflected wide by Marumo, after Wits' enterprising play led to the second-half replacement shooting from a dangerous position.

The stalemate sees Wits remain in seventh position in the league standings, while City climb a place to 14th.
