Woman arrested for bomb threats

2011-06-14 14:24

A 44-year-old woman was arrested in connection with threats to bomb the Medupi power station in Lephalale, Limpopo police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said the woman was arrested yesterday in Mangaung, Free State, after allegedly calling in two bomb threats in the past week.

The first threat was made on Saturday and the last yesterday, he said.

In both incidents, police were called in to comb the area and workers at the power station had to be evacuated.

The power plant was closed on those days and pedestrians were re-directed around the area.

Mulaudzi said the threat had nothing to do with a strike by workers.

On May 10, a protest by about 500 workers led to the closure of the site after vehicles were damaged.

Medupi is a new dry-cooled coal-fired power station being built by Eskom, scheduled to be fully operational by 2015.

The woman will appear in the Lephalale Magistrates Court on Friday.
