Woman arrested for municipal fraud

2010-11-12 10:06

A 25-year-old woman from Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape was arrested in Durban yesterday for her alleged involvement in municipal fraud and corruption, police said today.

“The woman’s brother, who was working at the Alfred Nzo municipality in Mount Ayliff, was stealing money from the municipality and depositing it into her company’s bank account,” said spokesperson Captain Mlungisi Matidane.

“The woman was spending the money on hiring expensive cars, booking into expensive hotels and buying expensive whisky all around KwaZulu-Natal.”

The brother and 12 others were arrested last year on fraud and corruption charges, and were out on bail.

The woman was caught by the commercial branch unit on fraud and corruption in KwaZulu-Natal and was taken back to Mount Ayliff in the Eastern Cape, Matidane said.

She was expected to appear in the Mount Ayliff Magistrate’s Court today.
