Wonderkop residents ask Nkosinathi Nhleko to build police station

2014-08-08 21:18

Residents of Wonderkop near Marikana in the North West have asked Police Minister Nkosinathi Nhleko to re-establish a satellite police station in the area.

Nhleko was in Rustenburg to engage with residents, businesses, churches, teachers and pupils, said spokesperson Musa Zondi today.

Zondi said concerns were raised during a meeting at the Wonderkop community hall yesterday about policing in the area.

The Wonderkop satellite police station was closed down after a number of killings related to the platinum sector wage strike in August 2012.

Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said there was a main police station in Marikana but due to security and safety reasons for officers, a satellite police station for Wonderkop had not been arranged since 2012.

“We really implore you minister to ensure that satellite station is brought back,” one resident reportedly said during the meeting.

Nhleko told the community a study was being conducted into the possibility of building a fully fledged police station in the area.

He would report back to the community as soon as it was completed, Zondi said.

Nhleko also told residents not to support pawn shops in the area.

“We should not buy stolen goods. Even though it may appear cheap, it may have resulted in someone getting killed and it can’t be correct to own something which resulted in someone losing their life,” he said.
