World Cup: Family fun

2010-06-12 11:30

There are many activities to keep your active children busy and frustrated parents calm during the World Cup. With the long school holidays here already, it is an excellent idea to keep your finger on the pulse of things to do.
In keeping with the spirit of the 2010 World Cup, several places around the country will be hosting activities and events that will be entertaining from now until July 11.

This week we focus on soccer-themed activities in the Western Cape and Gauteng.

Cape Town

» South Africa’s first observation wheel has been put up at the V&A Waterfront. The Wheel of Excellence is similar to the UK’s London Eye. It’s a giant 50m that will be in operation for the next six months and will give visitors a panoramic bird’s eye view of Cape Town, Paarl, Table Mountain and Robben Island. It has 36 fully-enclosed cabins where you can sit back and enjoy the city skyline on the 20 minute round trip. It’s open between 9am and 5pm at Canal Site, V&A Waterfront. Tickets cost R70 per person,

» Canal Walk shopping centre has embraced soccer fever with a line up of children’s entertainment. Until Saturday July 10, kids can visit the La Piazza soccer pitch and enjoy some soccer fun with 5 kicks to the goals for R10, from 12pm until 4pm daily. If your little striker gets past the goalie they will be entered into the Goals for Good Competition and will stand a chance of winning the main great prize. All proceeds will be donated to the Canal Walk Foundation.

Gauteng

» The Viva Soccer camp will have big screen viewings of the semi-finals, popcorn coloured to match the teams playing, vuvuzelas blaring loud and a whole bunch of other camp fun.
The camp – which will take place at Cyara Lodge in Magaliesberg – includes 4 nights, 5 days, all meals, games and activities, transport and includes a visit to Amazing Mazes.

» The Brightwater Commons
Get into the spirit of things with the mall’s colourful extravaganza featuring a marimba band, traditional singers, dancers and the soulful beat of African drumming. With their theme for June and July being “Serving up Soccer”, the Randburg shopping centre has arranged over 40 TV screens around the centre.

» The Streetvains Soccer and Sports Court will be open daily from 10.30am to 6pm. You can put your soccer skills to the test in both tournaments and skills competitions on the grass area.

» If your children are aged between 3 and 12 a variety of jumping castles and inflatables will ensure your young ones have tons of fun.
It costs R25 per half hour of playtime. The area will include a 5m high slide, an obstacle course and a kiddie’s boxing ring among others.
