World Cup revolutionised perceptions of South Africa

2010-09-23 13:58

South Africa’s efforts at hosting the football World Cup transformed international perceptions of the country, with a vast majority of visitors coming away from the host nation with a better impression than before, a survey by football body Fifa has showed.

Fifa said today that three-quarters of the 1 480 World Cup visitors it polled during the tournament were on their first visit to South Africa.

Eighty-three percent said they planned to return to South Africa, while 94% said they would happily recommend South Africa to their friends and family.

The tournament had also helped foster a sense of unity among South Africans, Fifa said.

In a survey of 1 000 South Africans across the country, 91% said they felt their country was more unified after the tournament, while 87% said they were more confident than ever before in their nation’s capabilities.
