The perception the world has of South Africa is one of the main challenges facing the country, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane has said.

“South Africa is challenged by growing different perceptions, both internally and outside, about who we are and, in most cases, who we are not,” he told the SA Competitiveness Forum in Midrand today.

“As we face these challenges, one thing is clear and that is that South Africa is not the same as it was in 1994, and it has changed for the better and not for the worse.”

He said it was that message of positive change in the country that South Africans should communicate. Strides had been made in provision of general services, health, electricity and education, he said.

“We have made great strides in all fields in the world as a nation,” he said.

According to the programme, the forum planned to inspire South African leaders to create a country that could not be ignored.

The topics to be discussed included infrastructure, governance and leadership, education, skills and labour, and manufacturing and related services.

Chabane said each of these areas was critical to South Africa and would set the tone for the development and competitiveness of the country.

“It will help us attract investment and therefore create more jobs. The spin-off effect will be better lives for the vast majority of our people,” he said.

“Despite the challenges that the world economy is facing, we are making positive moves towards resolving the critical challenges which face our nation.”

Chabane said that for a long time the global economy was unaware of South Africa’s potential and its economy, infrastructure and possibilities, but now they knew and this would positively affect investment.

“So, our task as a nation is to go out there and convince the world that despite some of the challenges that we face, which are faced by any nation anyway, that we have got a vision to build a better world, not only for the future generations of our country, but also to make a significant contribution to the wellbeing of the world.”
