Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says he would never take the word of a self-proclaimed healer such as Baba Mokgawa or Dr Hassan Maluwa to help him win the lottery.

“I don’t believe in that one. Most of these people are themselves very poor. I would rather just pray to God,” he told News24.

Nor would he try a love potion to return a lost lover.

“No, no, no. That I will never do,” he insisted.

“It’s a big problem. They are misleading people in many ways,” he said of the self-proclaimed healers and prophets.

Motsoaledi said it was problematic that these healers were given slots to speak on African-language radio stations and make claims of being able to cure tuberculosis, malaria and Aids.

The minister said he wanted to look into the Broadcasting Act and approach the Advertising Standards Authority to make sure they could not make such claims to the public.

“You can’t discourage it, but you must regulate it,” he said.

The Traditional Healers’ Organisation cautioned people about making use of healers and prophets.

“We are not responsible for them, they are not part of our organisation or guided by the Health Professions Act,” said national coordinator Phephsile Maseko.

“We do not believe they work the same way we do.”
