Year in review: Eastern Cape education in crisis

2011-12-23 14:21

In a bid to rescue plummeting standards of public education in the Eastern Cape, the education department was put under administration, followed by the ailing Walter Sisulu University.

Why it matters:
Before Parliament in March, President Jacob Zuma cited examples of a crippled administration that had scrapped scholar transport for rural and farm children, and the feeding scheme because it was broke.

It failed to provide learner-teacher support material to all its schools and was losing the battle to eradicate mud schools.

Walter Sisulu University, which came about through the merger of three historically disadvantaged institutions of higher learning in the Transkei and Border region, was technically bankrupt and could not even afford to pay salaries when Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande announced the takeover.
