Year in review: Politics meets business in KwaZulu-Natal

2011-12-23 14:26

Two successive ANC provincial treasurers, economic affairs MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu and Speaker Peggy Nkonyeni, were added to the accused in the Amigos corruption trial of Uruguayan businessman Gaston Savoi.

Why it matters:
The prosecution is important not only because of the seniority of Mabuyakhulu and Nkonyeni and the large amount of taxpayers’ money involved (R480 million), but because it provides a unique glimpse of how the worlds of politics and business overlap.

Savoi allegedly paid off both Mabuyakhulu and Nkonyeni and the ruling party to get inflated tenders for services across provincial departments and using intervention from the head of treasury to bypass procedures.

Whatever the outcome of the case is, it will, for the first time, allow the public to hear just how this machine works.

It will also keep alive the debate on the secrecy around political party funding – the only issue on which all parties agree.
