Year in review: Welcome to Mpumalanga, cowboy country

2011-12-23 13:58

ANC chief at Ehlanzeni District Municipality Johan Ndlovu was shot dead on January 5 in what was largely perceived to be the continuation of political assassinations in Mpumalanga since 2009.

Suspended police commissioner General Bheki Cele appointed a 12-member task team to investigate, while the then boss of the National Prosecuting Authority, Menzi Simelane, pledged to deploy highly qualified prosecutors.

Ndlovu’s murder case is before the courts, so are the other three assassination cases of Mbombela council speaker Jimmy Mohlala, culture spokesperson Sammy Mpatlanyane and SA Communist Party member Bomber Ntshangase.

Why it matters:
The three cases are expected to confirm or debunk perceptions that a clique – or an individual – in the ANC was taking out rivals.

» Ermelo residents in Wesselton went on the rampage on February 15 to protest against the removal of their preferred candidate for councillor of ward 5. The ANC decided to involve communities in appointing councillors.

Why it matters:
Luthuli House appointed a task team to probe such incidents throughout the country. It remains to be seen if the party will continue to involve communities in appointing councillors.

» Tourism authorities in Mpumalanga, Mozambique and Swaziland decided to join forces under one brand – “Triland”. The initiative will enable tourists to visit three countries in one package.

Why it matters:

Triland is set to boost tourism to the region.
