Youth agency staff down tools

2011-12-08 08:49

A group of National Youth Development Agency members has gone on strike demanding higher bonuses, according to a report today.

The Times reported that 296 workers had been protesting since Monday after refusing to accept an 8.33% performance bonus.

Workers declared a dispute, saying it did not meet their usual double-digit allocation, the newspaper reported.

They approached the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration, which ruled that the agency should pay them a bonus of 18% by November 30.

The payments were not made and workers downed tools.

The agency was established by President Jacob Zuma to tackle youth development.

Agency chief financial officer Khatu Ramukumba told the publication the agency had not paid the 18% bonus by November 30 because its cash flow position was not healthy.

The agency would now start paying the bonuses because the presidency had transferred their quarterly funds into its account yesterday, he said.
