Youth league congress running late

2011-06-16 10:20

Two-and-a-half hours after the scheduled time, the 24th ANC Youth League congress had still not begun, despite the fact that President Jacob Zuma was waiting in the wings to make an address.

The congress is held at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg. It starts today and ends on Sunday.

At 11.30am, the expected 5 500 delegates were still streaming into the venue where the league’s leadership will be elected.

The incumbent leader Julius Malema arrived just before 10.30am, while his challenger, Lebogang Maile, strolled in half-an-hour before.

However, Zuma was unable to make his entrance until all of the youth representatives were seated.

While many were coming in, former league presidents, Fikile Mbalula and Malusi Gigaba, were welcomed onto the stage.

Security was tight with hundreds of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metro police officers, Gauteng Traffic Police and the SA Police Service visible at the venue.

In addition, security officers clad in black suits swarmed the perimeter of the conference hall.
