Zenani Mandela to be laid to rest

2010-06-17 07:48

Former president Nelson Mandela’s great granddaughter Zenani will

be buried in a private ceremony this morning, the Nelson Mandela Foundation

said.

Zenani died in a car crash two days after her 13th birthday on her

way home from the opening concert for the 2010 Fifa World Cup last

Thursday.

The funeral would be held at 10am in the chapel of St Stithians

College, Lyme Park, Sandton.

Members of the media and the public would only be allowed to attend

the funeral service while the burial would be a private family affair, the

foundation said.

Foundation spokesman Sello Hatang said her family would be

accommodated inside the chapel, and a marquee would be erected for others

arriving to express their condolences.

Apart from the tragedy of the teenager’s death, it also put paid to

hopes that Mandela would attend the opening game on Friday night between Bafana

Bafana and Mexico, as the grieving family felt attending the game would be

inappropriate.

She is the granddaughter of Zindzi Mandela, who is the daughter of

Mandela’s second wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The driver of the car, Sizwe Mankazana, is the 23-year-old son of

Zindzi’s partner.

He was initially arrested, with police saying he would be charged

with drunk driving and culpable homicide, but the case was struck off the roll

pending further investigation.

He would appear in court on July 26, two weeks after the World

Cup.
