Zindzi Mandela: Winnie didn't expect to be in will

2014-02-05 15:45

Former president Nelson Mandela’s daughter Zindzi says media reports that her father had left Winnie Madikizela-Mandela out of his will are “mischievous and sensationalist”.

Zindzi, who is one of Madikizela-Mandela’s daughters, took to Twitter to say that her mother had not “attended the reading of (Mandela’s) will as she didn’t regard herself as a beneficiary”.

“Why would she (Madikizela-Mandela) expect to be maintained after his passing when she was never maintained during his life-time?”

Mandela’s will was read to family members on Monday, following which parts of it were made available to the media.

The fact that Madikizela-Mandela was not mentioned in the parts of the will made public has since been the subject of much debate on social media and radio talk shows.

Zindzi said on Twitter that Madikizela-Mandela

“will continue to mourn my father according to traditional protocols whilst holding Mama Graça’s hand throughout this difficult period”.

Graça Machel was Mandela’s third wife.

Zindzi added that “no amount of speculation will define the love that is shared by our family even when we disagree on issues from time to time”.

City Press has confirmed with a source close to the family that the Twitter account belongs to Zindzi.
