Fallen kwaito star Bonginkosi “Zola” Dlamini is returning to TV. At the height of his fame, Dlamini was the star of his own show, Zola 7.

Now he’s shooting a new 13-episode drama series called aYeYe on Vuzu Amp. He’ll appear on our screens from January?19 as the character Isaac. He was last seen on TV in 2012 on the Mzansi telenovela Inkaba.

Early this month, Dlamini admitted to Sunday Sun that he was selling his music from the boot of his car. The paper also reported that he’s flat broke.

He told the newspaper: “I haven’t got any deal yet. But at this point in time, I carry my CDs wherever I get booked to perform. After my performance, I open my boot and sell my music.

“It’s tough because sometimes I don’t even sell that many.” aYeYe’s publicist, Bongiwe Potelwa, didn’t want to say much about the show, but confirmed on Friday that Dlamini was in the cast, alongside actor Thapelo Mokoena, TV presenter Sthembiso “SK” Khoza and comedian Mpho “Popps” Modikoane.

“The atmosphere on set is phenomenal. All the actors are excited about this game-changing series. Viewers will definitely enjoy this refreshing drama,” said Potelwa.

She said Dlamini preferred not to speak to City Press.

A show insider said Dlamini would play an inspiring and positive role on aYeYe. “Isaac is going through a lot in life, but at the end his life turns around,” said another insider.

The second source said Dlamini would in effect be playing himself on the show and many people would relate to Isaac’s story line.
