Zulu king requests R18 million for more palaces

The Royal Household department which caters for the needs of King Goodwill Zwelithini has requested R18 million from the provincial legislature, according to a report.

The king has asked for R6 million to build a palace for his sixth wife, Queen Zola Mafu, the Mercury reported today.

He also wants R12 million to build a new house at Nkonyeni palace.

The request was tabled at a meeting of the premier and the royal household portfolio committee at the legislature in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.

The royal house received R57.7 million from the provincial government and R62.4 million has been budgeted for the next financial year.

Chief financial officer of the department, Mduduzi Mthembu, said the department wanted a further R18 million over three years.

The king has six queens living in palaces in different parts of Nongoma.

His sixth wife Queen Zola was living with Queen Mntombi Dlamini.
