Zuma ‘Spear’: Azapo slams ‘repugnant’ vandalism

2012-05-22 15:22

The Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) has condemned the defacing of the Brett Murray painting of President Jacob Zuma.

In a statement, Azapo says it doesn’t condone the painting but finds the act of defacing it “repugnant”.

The controversial painting of Zuma in which his genitals are exposed, was smeared with paint by two men this morning. They were arrested.

“We should allow the case brought by the ANC (against the Goodman Gallery, City Press and Brett Murray for the removal of the painting) and its allies to be heard in court without any parallel forms of criminality,” the Azapo statement reads.

“We cannot afford to go back to the old ways where members and supporters of the ANC (who) are not happy with their political opponents resort to criminality such as burning and thresing of people and houses.”
