Zuma announces census

2011-08-22 09:35

At least 156 000 people will be involved in counting how many people are living in the country, President Jacob Zuma has said.

Zuma, who officially launched Census 2011 in Pretoria, urged all those who are in the country on the night of October 9 and October 10 to answer the survey of 75 questions.

“Projections suggest South Africa’s population could be around 50 million. We need to know if this is true,” the president said.

He said that the census, which will see enumerators visiting households from October 10, would be conducted in all official languages, as well as in French and Portuguese.

The last census was carried out in 2001, when it was determined that there were 44.8 million people living in South Africa.
