Zuma appoints Zondo to ConCourt

2012-08-14 14:34

President Jacob Zuma has announced the appointment of Justice Raymond Mnyamezeli Mlungisi Zondo to the vacant position in the Constitutional Court.

Zondo fills a vacancy left by the departure of former Chief Justice Sandile Ngcobo who retired last year.

Zuma’s spokesperson, Mac Maharaj, said Zondo had over 20 years’ experience in the legal profession and on the bench.

He was appointed a judge in the Labour Court in 1997, and has been an acting judge in the Constitutional Court since last year.

His appointment is with effect from September 1, Maharaj said in a statement.

Zuma consulted Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng and leaders of political parties before making the appointment.

DA leader Helen Zille had recommended Judge Mandisa Maya for the position, and publicly explained why she was the most suitable candidate among the judges who were available for appointment.

She described Maya as a person who was held in “high esteem by the legal fraternity and civil society”, and as someone who had an “independent mind” and was not afraid to deliver dissenting judgments.

Zondo holds qualifications in labour law, patent law, and commercial law.

He also served as the judge-president of the Labour Court for a decade, and served as a judge in the North Gauteng High Court.
