President Jacob Zuma has appointed KwaZulu-Natal attorney Mxolisi Nxasana as the new national director of public prosecutions.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has been without a permanent head since December 2011, when Advocate Menzi Simelane was placed on special leave.

Zuma’s spokesperson, Mac Maharaj, also confirmed the appointment of Advocate Vas Soni SC as the new head of the Special Investigating Unit.

Soni, who previously served as a member of the Judicial Service Commission, hails from KwaZulu-Natal, but has been practising as an advocate and acting judge in Johannesburg.

The SIU has been without a permanent head since the resignation of former judge Willem Heath in December 2011.

“Mr Nxasana currently practises as an attorney with a wealth of experience in criminal litigation, coupled with his having occupied senior positions in the legal profession including the chairpersonship of the KwaZulu-Natal Law Society,” said Maharaj.

Zuma also appointed Advocate Moipone Noko as the KwaZulu-Natal head of the NPA.

Zuma “extended his congratulations to the three appointees and wished them well in their endeavours, confident that their appointments will lend credibility, integrity and stability to the institutions which they now will lead”.
