President Jacob Zuma does not owe anyone an explanation on why he reshuffled his cabinet, Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has said.

“The president has a prerogative to make any decision in relation to the cabinet,” Vavi told SAfm today.

“After all, this is about his own performance and he [Zuma] needs to go to the public next year and account as a president in terms of what he has or has not done to pursue the goal of building a better life for all.”

The Congress of SA Trade Unions welcomed yesterday the appointment of Connie September – “a product of our trade union movement” – as the new human settlements minister, replacing Tokyo Sexwale.

Sexwale “respected” Zuma’s decision, The New Age newspaper reported today.

“I respect whatever decisions are made by the president,” said Sexwale, who was replaced by Connie September.

“Whatever they are, we respect it.”

Zuma axed three of his ministers in a Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday.

Sexwale, embattled Communications Minister Dina Pule and Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Richard Baloyi lost their jobs.

Sexwale campaigned against Zuma’s re-election as African National Congress leader at the ruling party’s national elective conference in December.
