Zuma donates R50 000 for uniforms

President Jacob Zuma donated R50 000 from his own pocket to a fund that buys school uniforms for orphaned and destitute children.

At one of his annual Christmas parties for the elderly, which took place in Savannah Park near Durban today, Zuma added his cash to the money pledged for the fund by local businesses.

Zuma was by far the biggest donor. A total of R78 000 was collected.

Zuma said he was grateful to those who had given, saying they had done the right thing because children were the future of South Africa.

Hundreds of elderly men and women attended the Christmas bash, which ended with them receiving food parcels and blankets. The party was made possible by Masiqhakaze Women’s Organisation and several entrepreneurs from Durban.

Zuma appealed to more people to support Masiqhakaze’s bid to ensure that all pupils have school uniforms.

He also urged young people to care for the elderly, saying they were the heritage of this country.

This is one of two parties Zuma holds for senior citizens each year. The other will take place on Saturday at his homestead in Nkandla.

Zuma, who arrived back in the country last night from a working trip to Tanzania, told thousands of people who attend the party that elderly people are precious and should be treated as such.

“There are two stages in a person’s life where they need attention and care – at birth and old age,” he said.

“It is our responsibility to look after them because when a person is at an old age they no longer have the energy they had when they were young. In fact, they become like children again.”
