President Jacob Zuma will be attending the 26th New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) heads of state and government orientation committee meeting in Addis Ababa today.

Zuma was in Ethiopia for the African Union Assembly on intra-African trade, spokesperson Clayson Monyela said in a statement.

The two-day meeting, which starts tomorrow, was the 18th ordinary session of the assembly.

Delegates of the assembly were expected to reflect on the recommendations of the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Union Conference of Ministers of Trade.

“The high-level political discussion on issues relating to continental integration and intra-African trade present South Africa with an opportunity to lead and shape the approach and future agenda on these important areas,” Monyela said.

Also on the agenda were peace and security issues, including post-conflict reconstruction.

Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who has been nominated as chair of the African Union Commission was part of the president’s delegation.

Elections for the position would take place during the summit, also to be held in Addis Ababa.

International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister of State Security Siyabonga Cwele, Public Service Minister Roy Padayachee were also accompanying Zuma on the working visit.
