President Jacob Zuma is looking into the appointment of the head of the Special Investigating Unit, the presidency has said.

“The matter is still receiving the attention of President Jacob Zuma,” said his spokesman Mac Maharaj yesterday.

“It would be inappropriate to disclose the names of the candidates that are under consideration, in order to protect their privacy as well as the integrity of the process and the institution,” he said.

The corruption-fighting unit has been without a permanent head for 14 months, after Judge Willem Heath resigned in late 2011, a fortnight after being appointed.

Yesterday, City Press reported that senior advocate Guido Penzhorn revealed Zuma offered him the position as head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) in February.

But he has since heard nothing from Zuma or the justice department and suggested the president was going to appoint someone else to head the SIU.

“The fact that the president invited me to head the SIU speaks volumes to his commitment in fighting corruption in state institutions,” Penzhorn said.
