Zuma sets aside ministerial axe

2010-04-30 17:54

Government ministers who do not meet their performance targets may

not necessarily be removed from their positions, according to President Jacob

Zuma.

“Some people may not be measuring up to the task because of

expectations. We can’t put an axe (over their heads),” Zuma told the media in

Pretoria today.

Zuma and deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe were signing

performance agreements with the country’s 34 ministers.

“We are saying that all ministers, all of us, must have measurable

outcomes. I don’t think we should look at this as a way to try to punish

people,” Zuma said.

He said the agreements and the set targets would not be made public

as it was the prerogative of the ministers involved to divulge the

information.

Minister in the presidency Trevor Manuel, making light of the

questions posed by the media, revealed what his contract stated: “Mine says if I

don’t meet the targets, I will be sent for re-education for six months in

Pofadder.”
