Zuma sympathises with Kasrils family

2009-11-10 11:25

President Jacob Zuma today conveyed his condolences to

ex-intelligence minister Ronnie Kasrils and his family after the death of his

wife, Eleanor.

“We pray for the family to remain strong during this difficult

time,” Zuma said.

“Eleanor joins the galaxy of South African heroes and heroines who

have departed. We are proud of the role she has played in the evolution of our

democratic society.

“Yet another spear has fallen, let us pick it up and run with it in

a manner that would make Eleanor proud.”

Eleanor, the wife of Ronnie Kasrils, died aged 73 on Sunday after a

stroke.

She was born in 1936 and joined the Congress of Democrats in 1960

after the Sharpeville massacre.

She participated in Umkhonto we Sizwe activities in Durban and was

arrested in 1963. She went into exile with her husband the same year, after

escaping from custody.

She did work for the African National Congress in Tanzania and

Britain and worked for ANC president Oliver Tambo from 1990 until his death in

1993, when she returned to South Africa.

She is survived by her husband, daughter Bridgette and sons Andrew

and Christopher.
