Zuma the architect for HIV/Aids strategy

2009-12-01 14:00

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma is the architect who will rewrite the future

of HIV/Aids across the continent, executive director of UNAids Michel Sidibe

said today.

Addressing an international World Aids Day commemoration in

Pretoria, Sidibe said Zuma should not waste any time in addressing the scourge

of HIV/Aids.

“We cannot afford to waste another moment while the measure of

waste is counted by death.”

Sidibe said that last year two million people died of the disease

across the world while 15 million were waiting for treatment.

He applauded government’s national strategic plan to halve new

infections by 2011 and ensure that 80% of people living with the disease had

access to treatment.

“That decision should have been taken a long time ago but it’s not

too late. You are the architect.”

Of those who died last year, 1.9 million were from developing

countries and 1.4 million from the African continent.

“Aids is an epidemic of inequalities. What you do here today will

write or re-write the story of HIV/Aids across Africa,” said Sidibe.

Zuma was expected to address the gathering later today.
