Zuma to announce flood budget in opening address

2011-02-03 10:33

President Jacob Zuma will announce the allocation to communities affected by flooding in January in his state of the nation address next week, Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane said today.

“With regard to the floods, the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for budgeting is working on figures,” Chabane told a media briefing following a Cabinet meeting in Pretoria yesterday.

“The president, in his state of the nation address, will announce what relief the state is going to provide for various communities and business entities and anyone else affected by floods.”

Chabane said a 24-hour operations room had been “re-activated” to ensure the speedy flow of information regarding the floods.

“Cabinet has noted the effect of the floods in a number of communities and re-affirmed its commitment to providing assistance and support to all affected communities,” he said.

Chabane said an IMC would ensure the government helped affected people.

The National Disaster Management Centre, monitoring the situation countrywide, provided regular reports to the IMC.

“The public must be assured that government is doing everything to mitigate the effect of the floods,” Chabane said.
