Zuma to focus on economic challenges in his address

2010-02-11 07:18

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma is likely to zoom in on the challenges facing

the South African economy when he delivers his State-of-the-nation address

today.

Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane, who is responsible for

monitoring and evaluation, said Zuma’s speech would touch on the impact the

global recession has had on the local economy and on efforts to create “ decent

work”.

“Importantly the address will look at how we most effectively

support an accelerated recovery, and beyond that, sustained growth over the

medium to long term,” he said.

However, the president is likely to steer clear of controversial

issues such as the revision in the mandate of the reserve bank or the commenting

on the clamour for the nationalisation of mines that the ANC Youth League has

been making.

Chabane said the nationalisation debate was not on the agenda of

the government and that Zuma would want to allow the debate to continue without

interference from his office.

Similarly, he is unlikely to mention controversial issue of

presidential pardons.

The ANC’s top priorities—health, education, crime, jobs, and rural

development—will feature strongly as they form the focus of the Zuma

administration during this term.
