Zuma to lead delegation to South Sudan

2011-07-08 07:05

President Jacob Zuma will lead a delegation attending the inaugural celebration to the newly formed Republic of South Sudan, the department of international relations and co-operation said yesterday.

“This historic moment is a fulfilment of the wishes of the people of South Sudan for self determination,” spokesman Clayson Monyela said.

“President Jacob Zuma will on behalf of the people and government of South Africa extend a congratulatory message to the people of the new Republic of South Sudan on its independence.”

The celebrations were scheduled to occur tomorrow.

The delegation would also consist of International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, Minister in the Presidency, Collins Chabane and the presidential envoy to Sudan, Charles Nqakula, he said.

A majority of South Sudanese voted to secede from Sudan in a referendum in January. They would become the first new African country after Eritrea split from Ethiopia in 1993.

“South Sudan has fulfilled all the necessary requirements that are mandatory in international law in order for a country to be declared a sovereign state. South Africa officially recognises the Republic of South Sudan and welcomes the 54th state of Africa,” Monyela said.

He said that the SA government would support efforts aimed at ensuring a peaceful and stable environment in the country.
