Zuma’s ‘murderous regime’ cares only about itself, Malema tells miners

2013-07-12 09:17

President Jacob Zuma’s “murderous regime” cares only about itself, Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema told a crowd at the North Gauteng High Court where Marikana miners are asking the court to force government to pay their legal fees.

“The government is caring only about themselves. They don’t care about you,” he told the crowd.

He accused Zuma’s “murderous regime” of killing the miners.

“They pay only the lawyers of murderers. Those who have killed people are getting money.”

Malema and his associates yesterday made a brief appearance at court after a media briefing in Johannesburg to launch the EFF.

Malema made an entrance, with Kenny Kunene and Floyd Shivambu in tow. They briefly stayed during the proceedings while Advocate Dali Mpofu argued his case for funding and the rights of the miners.

Mpofu argued that his team, which represents the injured and arrested miners at the Marikana Commission of Inquiry, does not have adequate funding to carry on representing them at the hearings.

The commission was instituted after 34 miners were shot dead by police on August 16.

Mpofu argued that the matter be regarded as semi-urgent as the commission’s hearings were set to resume on Monday.

He asked that an interim order be granted for the state to finance the legal costs, which senior counsel George Bizos agreed to.

“We need to carry on with the work we have already started,” Bizos said.

The case resumes today.
