Zuma’s support among youth hits all-time low

President Jacob Zuma’s support among young South Africans has hit an all-time low, according to a survey.

It had slumped from 40% in July this year to 32% at present, consumer insights company Pondering Panda said in a statement today.

“Only one in three young South Africans think that Zuma is doing a good job as president of running the country.”

The survey conducted at the end of October polled 3 371 South Africans between the ages of 18 and 34.

Pondering Panda said young black South Africans were most likely to approve of the president’s performance, with 36% giving him the thumbs up.

In contrast, only 17% of white respondents, 11% of coloureds, and 13% of Indians thought he was doing a good job.

Support for Zuma fell among all racial groups, compared to the July survey.

Zuma received most support from the youth in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, with 48% of them approving of his leadership.

His score was the lowest in the Western Cape, at 18%.

Zuma will be seeking re-election at the ANC’s elective conference in Mangaung in December.
