£1 000 meal a big hit in London

2008-02-02 00:00

London — The Vivat Bacchus Restaurant, which is making waves with its exclusive six-course meal at £1 000 a head, is in the hands of two South Africans.

Even for well-heeled locals with pounds in their pockets, the grand-slam dinner is big news.

The owners, Neleen Strauss and Gerrie Knoetze, have been inundated by journalists from all over the world. Strauss said: “A few people have already ordered the special meal. The dinner is served to a maximum of six people, and has to be ordered 48 hours in advance.”

The idea of an over-the-top night out originated a few weeks ago, when clients asked for something really special, to mark their annual bonus.

January and February, which is bonus time for brokers, advocates and accountants, are proving to be harvest months for restaurants and other leisure spots.

So, if you can cough up R14 000 without turning a hair, you can expect to start off with a glass of champagne, followed by Royal Sevruga caviar, fresh Bahama rock lobster linguine, two-year matured Joselita ham from Spain, grilled Wagyu fillet steak (similar to Kobe steak) from Australia, a variety of the best cheeses in Europe and Valrhona Belgian chocolate soufflé, coffee and cognac.
