10 pupils appear in court over charges of public violence

TEN pupils from Mehlokazulu High School in Imbali appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with charges of public violence.

All 10 — who said they were over 18 — were released on warning after electing to apply for legal aid. The court was told that as many as 16 other younger pupils were going to be summonsed to appear together with them when the case returns to court on August 5.

The charges facing the pupils follow riots at the school over two days this week when pupils allegedly demanded to know what had happened to the money they had won in soccer competitions and other school activities.

The school closed early on Tuesday after police arrested pupils for allegedly burning tyres, breaking windows and blockading FJ Sithole Road next to the school with rocks.

Sections of the roof of the school were allegedly broken during the violence.

A source had said the chaos started on Monday morning when the pupils tried to prevent teachers from entering the school premises.
