100 vehicles suspended

MORE than 100 unroadworthy vehicles have been taken off the province’s roads as the traffic department tries to keep the Easter holiday road death toll down.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu said 23 accidents had been reported in the province from Friday to yesterday morning.

“These accidents resulted in 30 deaths. Last year on Easter Sunday, there were 35 accidents which claimed 36 lives. With these numbers, we can say there is improvement in the way in which motorists behave on the roads,” he said during a roadblock at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza.

Mchunu said traffic officers had stopped more than 22 000 vehicles around KwaZulu-Natal, suspending more than 100 of these, and about 5 000 fines were issued.

Traffic was pouring into KZN through the plaza at the rate of about 1 400 vehicles per hour by mid-morning yesterday, and the number was expected to increase during the day to more than 2 000 vehicles per hour.

“We appeal to motorists to abide by the rules of the road. Recklessness and negligence are the main cause of road accidents, with alcohol exacerbating the problem,” said Mchunu.

Mchunu said there would be more roadblocks at roads carrying high traffic volumes.
