14 yachts take part in Midmar summer Series

2009-01-29 00:00

HMYC held their Summer Series Regatta at Midmar over the weekend. A total of 14 yachts took part under the watchful eye of race officer Roy Shooter. Winds were good throughout and the crews enjoyed good courses and racing. Five races were held. The biggest class was the Lasers with seven boats — the majority came from Michaelhouse but included a couple of senior sailors.

Allan Barr took part in his Dart and Georg Muller and crew raced their L26 Desiree. Relishing the fresh winds was the 29er Funtastic, sailed by Rob Tarboton with Michaelhouse sailor Robert Renton as crew.

Also competing was the Hickman 680 “exotic” keeler Dynamite. This high-speed machine, skippered by Anton Ellens and crewed by Vaughan Gerson and friends, was seen really flying along before disaster struck and their rudder broke, forcing their retirement on Saturday, but not before they were involved in some spectacular racing against Tarboton’s 29er. Their speed with spinnakers set was amazing. Despite emergency repairs, Dynamite’s rudder broke again and they were forced to retire.

Three Hunters also took part. On Sunday, the sun beat down but the wind was good, so a couple of good races were enjoyed in the morning but, as usual, the afternoon saw only one race completed before a storm struck Midmar with lashing rain and heavy wind squalls. Fortunately, all the yachts returned to shore safely.

Overall Results

1st, Funtastic 29er, R. Tarboton; 2nd, Dart, Allan Barr; 3rd, Laser, Peter Dommet; 4th, Laser 4.7, Byron Gray; 5th, Laser, Ken Renton; 6th, L26, Georg Muller.

On Sunday, HMYC is holding their Class Championship Series for Hunters and the monthly mug for any other class on boat and skipper handicaps. A skippers’ briefing takes place at 10.30 am.

The race officer will be Peter Metcalfe with Robin McIntosh on rescue. The HMYC nine-hour-long distance race is looming and takes place on February 21 and February 22.

This prestigious event will attract a very big entry of all yacht sizes and is a highlight race in the club’s season. Visitors are expected from other yacht clubs in KwaZulu-Natal and from Gauteng. This is usually a fun day for families at HMYC.

Now is the time to get the cobwebs off your yachts and join in for fun day at the dam. Radio sailors are scheduled to start the 2009 season with a R36 Shipmate League race at HMYC at Midmar on Saturday afternoon starting at 2 pm.
