A TIP-OFF to the police at the King Shaka International Airport in Durban on Sunday led to the arrest of a 53-year-old Amanzimtoti woman carrying cocaine worth more than half a million rand strapped to her body.

The police members were waiting for Jo-Anne Efne Farrell to arrive on the flight from Dubai at about 5.45 pm and on searching her, found she was allegedly concealing 1,6 kg of cocaine in a foil pouch strapped to her body.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said the street value of the recovered cocaine is more than R540 000. The woman was immediately arrested and charged with possession of drugs. She appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The case was postponed to February 24 for a formal bail application. Farrell was remanded in custody.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended airport police and Customs Officials for the breakthrough. “I am glad that members’ hard work and patience has paid off. I am delighted that we are now able to reach those that are on the very top of this vicious chain that destroys the youth of our province,” she said.
