The Msunduzi Diwali Festival held at the Protea Sports Complex at the weekend was the most successful Pietermaritzburg has ever seen, organisers said.

Peru Govender, the director of this year’s festival and vice-president of the Midlands Hindu Society, said the festival was attended by about 18 000 people over the three days. Over 2 000 people attended the festival on Friday, over 12 000 on Saturday and over 3 000 attended the closing ceremony on Sunday.

The theme of the festival this year was “the triumph of light over darkness”. One of the main speakers at the function on Saturday was Msunduzi Mayor Zanele Hlatshwayo.

On behalf of the organisers, Govender thanked all the people who attended the festival and all the sponsors who made it possible.

Mergan Chetty, a councillor, said Msunduzi Municipality is proud to have been associated with the event.

“We are very proud of the successful hosting of the festival by the Midlands Hindu Society and we would also like to thank all those who attended the festival in their numbers.”
