1860 extravaganza: all welcome to attend

2010-12-02 00:00

THE public is invited to the 1860 Anniversary at Moses Mabhida People’s Park in Durban on Saturday.

The organising committee and the provincial government are urging members of the Indian community to attend the commemorative event in force. It starts at 10 am and ends at 5 pm.

The multi-cultural programme is billed as a national celebration of unity. The programme will start with a colourful float procession through the streets of Durban.

The processional opening ceremony is being choreographed by artist Satchu Anamalay. He describes it as a symbolic re-enactment of indentured labourers working on sugar cane fields.

The ceremony will feature a collaborative percussive ensemble involving 20 community artists. Twenty-five dance companies involving over 250 artists will perform simultaneously to the 2010 World Cup theme song Waka Waka in a display of South African colour and splendour.

The final item on the programme will be a music and dance extravaganza choreographed to bring the event to a spectacular close. This will be followed by a fireworks display. Popular South African actors, comperes, comedians and DJs will take to the stage during the day.
