2010 Reading Highlights: Stephanie Saville

2010-12-01 00:00

I’M supposed to give two or three top reads but you’re getting four, in no particular order.

Days of Grace by Catherine Hall deals with one of my favourite literary periods, that of World War 2. Nora, a young evacuee goes to live with Grace, daughter of a country village rector. As the girls grow up they learn about each other, about love and the disillusionment life brings when people you trust break faith.

Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa describes life in a refugee camp at Jenin. It’s a stark soul read, beautifully crafted and one which stays with you for a while.

A much lighter read, The Angina Monologues by South African writer Rosamund Kendal, tells of life in a KZN provincial hospital. A fine mix of drama, humour and convincing horror, three young female doctors learn about life and love.

Pops & the Nearly Dead by the inimitable and hilariously irreverent Edyth Bulbring will have you chuckling and wanting more, as the pubescent Randolph St John Goodenough gets involved in retirement complex life after he is sent to stay with his grandfather. (Bulbring is a good choice for a Christmas gift for a teenage bookworm.)
