21 men linked to taxi violence in Stanger arrested

A TOTAL of 21 men believed to be linked to current taxi violence were arrested yesterday after the Hawks raided a home in Stanger.

MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Willies Mchunu welcomed the mass arrests of armed suspects and the discovery of high-calibre automatic weapons from people associated with the taxi industry in Stanger.

Mchunu’s statement said top crack Hawks detectives raided on a house owned by a security company contracted to one of the taxi associations but “were met with a wave of firepower”. “However, the police managed to penetrate the house and found security officers as well as some of the taxi owners inside.”

Police recovered two AK47s, other illegal firearms and ammunition.

The incident follows a shooting where a convoy of Maphumulo Taxi Association owners and security guards was ambushed, leaving two dead.

“We … applaud the police for the work well done. The continued conflict in the KwaMaphumulo/KwaDukuza precinct is a serious concern to us. We have continuously engaged with the leadership of the industry in the area, but so far struggled to find a lasting solution to the conflict.”
