24-hour athletics event comes to PMB

2014-09-19 00:00

PIETERMARITZBURG will today host the first ever South African 24-Hour Championship. It all starts at 7 pm tonight at the Pietermaritzburg Msunduzi Athletics Stadium.

Apart from the 24-hour event, the basket includes a 100 miler (161 km) and 12-hour night race starting at 7 pm with a 50 miler starting at 7 am tomorrow and a 20 miler starting at 12 pm tomorrow.

Well known athletics administrator John Hall is behind the event.

Timing will be done electronically with a live video feed and live Internet updates that can be followed on the Capital Classic website www.100cc .co.za.

South Africa had a very rich history in the 24-hour event with the legendary Wally Hayward setting a world record in 1953 with a distance of 256 km. This was only bettered in 1973 and stood as a South African record till the end of 2013 when Johan van der Merwe broke it during a race in Taipei (258 km).

Sadly on the women’s side, we lag far behind the world with an SA record of just over 188 km versus the world record of 255 km.

With a field of 21 entries, of whom at least 10 are real title contenders, this event can only grow stronger and give SA its rightful place as one of the best 24-hour countries in the world.
