THREE people were killed and 10 others injured when a car, bakkie and taxi collided in Newcastle on Wednesday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said they were investigating a case of culpable homicide after the three cars lost control and collided.

He said the passengers in the taxi sustained minor injuries.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said some of the injured had been thrown out of the car while two others were still trapped in their vehicle. They assisted the injured and took them to hospital.

He said the two people who were in the car were freed from the wreckage by the fire department using the jaws of life; they had suffered serious injuries.

Attempts to locate the victims or their families were unsuccessful yesterday.

• In another accident yesterday, 14 people were injured after a tractor trailer carrying workers overturned on the Mandeni link road between the R102 and N2 yesterday afternoon.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said some of the passengers were lying on the side of the road with injuries ranging from minor to serious.
