4 hurt in taxi rank shooting

2007-12-05 00:00

FOUR people were shot in a flare-up of taxi violence at the Canon Gate market in Durban yesterday morning.

SAPS spokesman Vincent Mdunge said two of the victims were taxi drivers. Police later arrested two men, who had also been shot, in possession of guns. It is suspected they were in the taxi from which the drivers were shot. They were charged with public violence, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and were admitted to hospital.

KZN Taxi Council spokesman Bhungane Hadebe said a dispute broke out between Clermont and Durban Liner taxi drivers over routes.

Street vendors said they panicked when the shooting started. One woman said: “I almost left my fruit here when I saw a crowd of people running … after I heard the first gunshots”. She added that shooting at the taxi rank has happened before and “people have died”.

KZN Transport chief director advocate Simo Chamane met with taxi owners to seek a resolution to the conflict.

Transport spokeswoman Nonkululeko Mbatha said the department deployed police to the rank.
