KWAZULU-NATAL suffered 56 000 job losses in the second quarter of 2010 on the back of a staggering 44 000 job losses in the province’s manufacturing sector.

KZN’s unemployment rate has now surged to 20,8% from 19,3% in the first quarter of 2010, although this figure remains lower than the unemployment rates of the other provinces.

A total of 622 000 people have been classified as unemployed in KZN as at the end of June 2010.

Statistics South Africa’s Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the second quarter of 2010 also found that although the national unemployment rate remains virtually unchanged, several provinces experienced severe bouts of job losses.

The number of people in the labour force decreased by 59 000 quarter-on-quarter, while the number of discouraged work seekers increased by 68 000, Statistics SA said.

South Africa’s unemployment rate is now 25,3% compared with 25,2% in the first quarter of 2010.

KZN’s 56 000 job losses make it the worst-performing province, followed by the Western Cape with 46 000 job losses and Gauteng with 13 000 job losses.
